So now we get into the details. This was a difficult one to write but once again, Giga solved that problem by pulling an all nighter and expanding it another three panels.

Even within games themselves the rules of resurrection can vary wildly depending on what the game feels like. Being blasted by a random goon spawns you back at the last point while being shot in the face by your traitorous commanding officer kills you off for good. Imagine living in a world where death is an inconvenience until suddenly one day it isn't.

In game news, I finally got around to playing Persona 4 but it takes an age and a half to get going. Not a good combination with my short attention span. Enjoying it thus far though.

"Imagine living in a world where death is an inconvenience until suddenly one day it isn't."
that's actually the setup to Resonance of Fate
kind of.
There's a crazy story involving a system that controls that lives of everyone living in this tower which is actually all of humanity
it's interesting, go check it out.
TheMightyBox edit delete
And he fought bravely, and he died bravely, but he was forsaken by the ones he wished to save.
And when he died he died in vain.
etc. etc.

Props to you if you HAVEN'T played Project X Zone and you can recognize all the cameos in panel 3.
Hell, props if you can recognize some of them period with how small and pixelly they are.
GigaNerd17 edit delete
I actually think that all-nighter offset the lag from Daylight Savings, so I feel pretty good right now. But yeah, did waaaaaaaay too much on this one.

Experimented with texturing using only ink in Panel 4. I think it turned out well.

Also really pleased with the result of Panel 1. It's fascinating how easy the Cutout filter in Photoshop can turn cheesy image layers into something composite and awesome.
DryKirby64 edit delete
He's dead, you guys. We aren't pulling a "He's Just Hiding" here.

In other news, I picked up Rhythm Heaven Fever. The game's very fun, but my rhythm is awful. I'd still recommend it even to people who don't play rhythm games, because it's really easy to get into, but also really deep in its gameplay,

That said, "Monkey Watch" can go straight to the River Styx. I'm abysmal at it.
TheMightyBox edit delete
like if it was Proto Man who went into hiding under the forces of Dr. Wily in order to teach humanity a lesson about trying to create and force heroes that'd be one thing,
but y'all are letting tropes blind you from the fact that Mega Man doesn't have a reason to go into hiding.
TheMightyBox edit delete
Not gonna say we called it, buuuuuuuut...

Wait a minute... If that's the case, why did Roll get exited when Villager told her about Megaman's reveal in Smash 4? At that point, wouldn't he already be dead?
Guybrush20X6 edit delete reply
Stick around a while longer and you might find out.
NiGHTcapD (Guest) edit delete reply
Smash just IS. It's an alternative world, things can happen there that can't happen otherwise.
Also, are comics going to end involved in any way or another? "Worlds Unite" is coming relatively quick now, that's Sonic, Megaman, and many others. (Not counting Deadpool! Never count Deadpool!)
Might as well ask, in case you'll answer. Your thoughts on horses? (you probably know the ones)
Darius Drake (Guest) edit delete reply
My guess is one of three things (without breaking the "Nope, he's dead" comment DryKirby made):

1. Roll got excited in the hope that Megaman actually finially came back. Her hopes ended up being dashed, though.

2. Smash Bro's doesn't actually pit the real fighters against each other. Just imitations, so that the origionals don't have to continuously fight. This would also explain how Mario, Dr. Mario, and any "Vs. Self xNo." works in-universe.

3. The Megaman who's fighting in Smash isn't DLN-001. He's DLN-004, who might have been specifically made to fight in Smash. DLN-003, in this case, is X, by the way.
TheMightyBox edit delete reply
Actually, DLN-03 is Cut Man and DLN-04 is Guts Man. If X and any new robots had a DLN number they'd have to be 73 and 74.
Guybrush20X6 edit delete reply
If I remember correctly X's Number was DLN-Infinity.
No (Guest) edit delete reply
Actually, that's Zero's Wily Number.
Negaman1020 (Guest) edit delete reply
thren i guess SMegaman is DNL...

hey, you're talking so much about tropes, that counts as a pun.
Awesome Ando (Guest) edit delete reply
Yay! More story! ...yeah, that's all I've got right now...
Darth Cloaked Guy edit delete reply
He's gonna come back sooner or later. They Never Found the Body, after all.
kidra edit delete reply
Yeah, I've always thought it funny that in movies and stuff they say someone died because of a found piece of clothing. Food you ever think that his (insert piece of clothing here) might have just fallen off people?
DryKirby64 edit delete reply
Mega Man is a robot. His helmet is attached to his body.

It must have taken something deadly to tear it offa him.
Zrab (Guest) edit delete reply
Just to point out, he could infact take his helmet off, you see it clearly in megaman 7
DiZ Boshi (Guest) edit delete reply
You can go even further. In the end of the very first Megaman game, he takes off all his armor and changes into normal clothes. Helmet included of course.
DryKirby64 edit delete reply
...Okay, ya got me there. Never played much of Mega Man.

But then, why would he just randomly take his helmet off and go into hiding after defeating the giant monster threatening to destroy the city? All it'd do is cause pain and grief for hundreds of video game heroes, not to mention his fellow DLN series and Dr. Light himself. Not very heroic or even in-character for him.
Iamabrawler edit delete reply
"Dr. Light, if Mega Man dies, will we be able to bring him back?"
"Why? He will always come back! He's a video game character!"
"What if he doesn't? Did you really need to add that copy protection?"
"Of course! You wouldn't want fake Mega Mans running around! Imagine Dr. Wily copies his programming!"
"Bu what if-"
"He'll be fine!"
Mega Man dies.
SonataOfShadows (Guest) edit delete reply
He's not dead
Altoclarinetist (Guest) edit delete reply
Wow, it went from tragic to funny in one panel. You guys are good.
Star1412 edit delete reply
Yeah, Monkey Watch is really annoying.
DiZ Boshi (Guest) edit delete reply
INB4, Megaman is alive and has turned into the main villian of the series!!

Cliché I know, but it would be a nice plot twist. INB4, that's not the idea, but until we see the truth, I can especulate :P.

Also, those figures on the background (aside of Roll, Gardevoir and Protoman), who are they? I gotta know!! INB4, I have to guess myself.

(Yes, today's phrase is INB4)
TheMightyBox edit delete reply
I kinda wanna get people to guess, but at the same time it's way too small to get a read.
Here, see if you can recognize anything from this:
if not I'll list them off.
Lazruth (Guest) edit delete reply
Only one I could really tell was Morrigan in the top right.
ZephyrCrobat edit delete reply
I've played Project X Zone... but it's been so long, I can't remember their names.
DiZ Boshi (Guest) edit delete reply
I think that fighting Morrigan is a Belmont. Which? I'm not sure. I will say Simon, but it could be about anyone.

I think the one to the right of Rock's helmet is a character of Dead or Alive, but not sure, and don't know the names either. :/

If for a while no one guesses all, I guess we can see the list.
TheMightyBox edit delete reply
Well, some of you were right.
From left to right it's:
Ulala from Space Channel 5, I suppose reporting on the incident, Vashyron from Resonance of Fate leaping away from the scene, Imca from Valchyria Chronicles repairing Var, Soma from God Eater just hanging out and being emo, Morrigan from Darkstalkers flying off, and Jill Valentine from Resident Evil, giving some kind of signal I guess.
The two aren't fighting cause the fight's over, they just happened to be near each other.
Negaman1020 (Guest) edit delete reply
let's seee...i see MMZ zero up in the top right, i think that's ulala to the left...and i feel like i recognize a couple more people (the one next to ulalala(?) and the one under zero), but they're still kinda too small for me to make out.
Negaman1020 edit delete reply
Aaaaaand i didn't see that you had already given out the list.

i think my mistaking morrigan as zero is fairly understandable, that sprite just kinda looks like it's zero with his head in shadow.
Guest (Guest) edit delete reply
Isn't it more likely he's just in hiding or was kidnapped?
model S edit delete reply
model S
I see ulala! Of space channel 5
OshaliteX2 edit delete reply
This is good.
And I REALLY like how it looks as well. Not sure what, though.
Guest (Guest) edit delete reply
Well if he's dead, then what would happen if Roll met one and/or all of the other Mega Men?

For example: Megaman Volnutt from Legends, Megaman.EXE from Battle Network, Geo Stelar and Omega-Xis from Star Force, and Megaman X from the Megaman X and Megaman ZX (aka Biometal Model X) series.

An even better question, what would happen if she met herself from those other games? So many questions! I think I gave myself a headache.....
DryKirby64 edit delete reply
The only Mega Man characters you'll see in Venatus Prime are the Classic ones. X and Zero aren't coming for another 1,000+ years, and the others are based in alternative timelines. Plus, it'd be confusing having a bunch of Mega Men and Rolls running around the place anyway.
MizuNoRyuu edit delete reply
Sorry I haven't been commenting. XD

:< Oh Rock... I agree with Darth Cloaked Guy. I don't think any revive spells worked because Rock is still alive and kicking somewhere (being upgraded to X... jk). Poor Roll and Blues. *hugs the crap out of them*

Actually, what Roll says in the second to the last panel feels like a stab at Capcom. "Hey let's maek new megamanz gamez!"... *offs the franchize after a small niche retro run and a sad sad anniversary game*

Also: Oh geez Guybrush, you're starting Persona 4... XD *wants to drop that comic dub on you for lulz*

... Reminds me I always meant to make a guest strip for you guys. *partially wants to take credit for making some Persona jokes* >.>... <.<....
Guybrush20X6 edit delete reply
Funny thing is I started writing this back in 2010 with Mega Man as the main character and a year later when I shifted focus to Gardevoir, Capcom pulled the plug on everything Mega Man. Naturally I worked it in. I kept wondering if Capcom would bring him back before we did this arc or not but his only major releases were an iPhone game, a fan-game turned official and bunch of Japan only mobile games. Smash Bros is the closest thing we got.
JokerJay779 (Guest) edit delete reply
Did you really had to work it in as him dying? I know the reason the hospital was made was for it to be a memorial to Mega Man but did you really had to make it like that? Not every Hospital is a memorial to somebody. Also Mega Man could have just been a character that appears one telling Gardevoir how he feels about the whole Capcom thing and how he thinks that Mighty No. 9 is a replacement of him. Did you really need this drama?

apparently heads detaching and re-attaching are also part of art style change. HMI

This comic series got dark. FAST. I mean, it brushed some heavy subjects but I don't remember anything like this! Death and back story and... I like where you're going with this! :) On a side note I do hate it when game cutscenes contradict the actual gameplay like you said. Fricken unreliable phoenix downs!!!
Sabin-Man (Guest) edit delete reply
Oh God Persona 4. I would recommend Golden (because I've seen an LP of it but not of just 4 shhhh), but I can say that that game can make for some GREAT fun if it ever gets incorporated into this Comic.
Kibitz (Guest) edit delete reply
What is the superweapon from? I don't recognize it.

On a completely different note, it seems like Cloud's audience with Arceus didn't go well.
Magravan edit delete reply
There are many options, especially when you take into account that unlike a human, a Robot is easily reprogrammable.

Megaman's taken off his helmet several times that I've seen. It definitely need not have been malicious intent on his part.
JokerJay779 (Guest) edit delete reply
Who made the super weapon of Light City (I forgot the name of the place) And what was its purpose? Was it made to conquer or destroy?
JokerJay779 (Guest) edit delete reply
Ah plot death. A video game character's one weakness. Still can't believe the universe wanted Mega Man dead. **** you universe! I am going go make my own universe! With blackjack and hot females. And you know what? Forget the blackjack!
